Mellor Launches Next-Generation Strata: Revolutionising Small Bus Design

Mellor, a leading innovator in passenger transport solutions, proudly unveils the new Strata, redefining the small bus sector with many forward-thinking design enhancements. Manufactured in the UK and building upon the proven reliability and success of the original Strata — first launched in 2016 — the Strata offers operators and passengers alike a superior, more accessible, and sustainable travel experience.

Reimagining Accessibility and Passenger Comfort

Key upgrades in the new model Strata include:

Improved Accessibility: The redesigned rear saloon now features a single step up from the low floor section—reduced from two steps—to minimize trip hazards and enhance passenger safety. This change also increases the headroom by 100mm, improving overall accessibility and comfort. Additionally, the low-floor area has been extended by 266mm, allowing for four extra seats in this section. With up to twelve seats now available in the low-floor area, and space for up to two wheelchairs, passengers with reduced mobility benefit from easier movement and greater seating options, significantly enhancing their travel experience.

Enhanced Seating Layouts: The repositioned emergency door allows for an extra seat in the rear row for the Plus and Ultra variants, optimising passenger capacity without compromising comfort.

Enhanced Safety & Comfort: The latest models set new benchmarks in safety, accessibility, and onboard comfort. Built on the Mercedes Sprinter platform, these vehicles come equipped with a full suite of GSR2-compliant driver assistance systems, including Attention Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and Active Brake Assist—ensuring enhanced safety and heightened driver awareness.

Inside, the Class 1 variants feature dual tip-up seat areas, providing four dedicated priority seats while preserving a spacious, open interior design. Fully PSVAR-compliant, these buses integrate cutting-edge passenger information systems and accessibility enhancements, reaffirming Mellor’s commitment to inclusive, comfortable, and modern transport solutions.

John Randerson, CEO of Woodall Nicholson Group, which includes Mellor Bus, stated, “We are dedicated to enhancing our operations in the UK. The new Strata bus is designed with sustainable manufacturing in mind, protecting UK jobs and adhering to ethical procurement practices. This initiative will strengthen community connections by providing affordable and accessible transportation.”

Ideally Suited for Every Route

With a compact 2.3m width and lightweight construction, the new Strata continues to deliver unmatched agility. It is not just ideal, but adaptable for rural and suburban routes where larger buses may face operational challenges. Despite its size, it retains the premium quality and comfort expected of a full-sized bus, with an unrivalled cost of ownership.

Commitment to Sustainability

As a certified Low-Emission Bus (LEB), the Strata reduces environmental impact and supports operators through eligibility for government rebates such as the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG), ensuring a cost-effective, environmentally responsible solution. This is a testament to our commitment to providing not just sustainable, but also cost-effective solutions.
Benefitting from a proven and robust construction methodology, the Strata delivers exceptional fuel economy of up to 22mpg, offering a significantly lower cost of ownership compared to larger single-deck buses. Additionally, a tight 17-meter turning circle enhances manoeuvrability, making the Strata ideal for both urban and rural routes.

“Since its launch in 2016, the Strata has delivered exactly as we envisioned,” commented Richard Matthews, Mellor Sales Director. “It’s a robust, nimble, and exceptionally economical bus, designed with long-term value in mind. Some Strata customers have reported their vehicles have clocked over 500,000 kms in operation and continue to perform very well — proof of the outstanding build quality and low total cost of ownership that our customers can rely on.”

Configuration: A Bus for Every Need

Available in Class A or Class 1 configurations, the Strata range is engineered to meet a variety of operational needs, offering three distinct models:

  • Strata: max. capacity 22 passengers
  • Strata Plus: max. capacity 26 passengers
  • Strata Ultra: max. capacity 30 passengers

All variants feature a comfortable 2+2 seating layout and can accommodate up to two wheelchairs within the spacious low-floor area, ensuring accessibility for all passengers.
By bridging gaps in rural and suburban transport networks, the Strata plays a pivotal role in not just providing transport, but also combating social isolation, promoting community access, and ensuring the viability of essential services. Mellor once again sets the benchmark in small bus design, solidifying its reputation as an innovator in the sector and advocate of modern, sustainable public transport solutions.

Mellor will showcase the 30 passenger Strata Ultra at this year’s ALBUM Conference, taking place at the East Midlands Conference Centre 12-14 May 2025.
